I am a 100% sure that most of our first Marvel movie was Spider-Man, either the Andrew Garfield’s spider – man universe or the Tobey Maguire spider – man universe and of course the Tom Holland’s spider – man universe. No matter the Peter Parker, he will always be our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

The first Spider – man movie; titled ‘Spider-Man’ starring Tobey Maguire, directed by Sam Raimi came out on May 3rd, 2002. Produced by Sony Entertainment, this movie wasn’t a direct part of the MCU.  However, as the MCU enters phase 6, I am sure most of us Marvel maniacs  are looking forward to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man’s third movie ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, releasing on July 31st 2026. Many marvel fans believe that this could be the turning point of the MCU, the movie that would bring back the Marvel magic.

Background context

Critics believe that after Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Marvel had lost its touch and magic. With people having twisted opinions about She-Hulk as well as Ms. Marvel. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ around the corner, the Russo Brothers are making sure that Marvel is set right back on track. The first step towards this being ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ 

An overview of the trailer

** UNINTENSIONAL SPOILERS AHEAD **

The Spider-Man Brand New Day movie is set in the aftermath of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the released trailer of spider-man brand new day, we see the time after everyone has lost the memory of who Peter Parker is, including Peter Parker’s girlfriend MJ and his best friend Ned. The trailer revolves around how; the now alone Peter Parker is trying to tread through his life. The trailer opens at Peter Parker, hanging off a ledge, looking at an Instagram post of Ned and MJ showing excitement about their first day at MIT, with no memory of who Peter Parker is. The trailer then moves with Peter Parker’s voice over which is revealed to be a narrative he had written on a piece of paper with intentions to convey them to MJ. The narrative begins along the lines 

“Hi, My name is Peter Parker. You don’t remember me but we used to know each other.”

Solidifying the fact that this movie is set right after ‘No way home’. He goes on to read,

“Something bad was gonna happen, and the only way to stop it was to make everyone forget about me.” 

Through this, we are again given a glimpse of Peter Parker’s true nature, a person who puts others before himself. Knowing that he would lose everyone in his life when he had  already lost Aunt May. He still made the decision to make people forget him, knowing he’d lose MJ and Ned too. 

In the trailer we see how Peter Parker sits alone at the coffee shop that MJ works at, trying to reconnect with both MJ and Ned. We see Peter Parker sitting alone beside a running washing machine, his Spider-Man suit tumbling inside. This is the same Spider-Man suit that we see him stitching at the end of brand new day. This is because he is no longer recognised in the ‘Stark’ database, having been forgotten by Happy as well. Therefore, he cannot use the nanobots suit. We then see Spider-Man receiving the keys to the city, which we later see him fidgeting with near the same washing machine, sitting alone with no one to celebrate this achievement with. This sheds light on how even with having achieved such a big triumph, receiving the key to the city, Peter Parker has no one to celebrate this with no Aunt May, no MJ, no Ned. He then moves on to say 

“I am not just Peter Parker, I’m Spider-Man.” 

Reminiscing along the lines of Aunt May, 

“With great power comes great responsibility.” 

We then get the first glimpse of Punisher, in MCU spidey universe, where we see Spiderman and Punisher in some kind of fight with each other, with Punisher firing a shot at Spider-Man and Spider-Man swinging himself into a kick right on Punisher’s face sending him flying out of his Jeep. 

We’re then brought back to Peter Parker entering MJ’s apartment, where Peter Parker sees MJ with her new love interest. The scene is timed perfectly with the voice over of Peter saying, 

“even if it breaks Peter Parker’s heart.”

We then see Peter Parker, bruised and broken falling onto the ground with a voice over of him saying,

“What is happening to me?”

The trailer cuts to Peter Parker, clawing out of what seems to be a web cocoon, hanging off the ledge of a high building. Peter tries to shoot his web, realizing he does not have his web shooters, starts falling but surprisingly seems to get a hold of himself by ejecting a web, WITHOUT HIS WEB SHOOTERS?? This is the first biggest twist of the trailer. We already knew that Tobey Maguires’s spider man is the only spider man that can shoot organic webs. Both Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield’s spider man require web shooters. So, the fact that Tom Holland’s spider man can now shoot organic webs opens new doors for the MCU. It indicates that he is slowly mutating. We then see Peter Parker approach Doctor Banner asking for his help and Doctor Banner does not recognize Peter. It then revealed to us how Peter Parker is suffering, gripping his head followed by a scene of him being surprised by the condition of his own apartment that is covered in webs, indicating that he might not have any control over what he’s doing or what is happening to him at this point in the movie. In the background we can hear Doctor Banners say, 

“If DNA is mutating it would be enormously dangerous.”

This cements the fact that Tom Holland’s spider man is evolving as his DNA is mutating into something dangerous or something that he cannot control. We then hear an unknown narrator say that,

“Spiders have three lives and when between cycles, it can leave the spider vulnerable.”

This could only mean that, when we see Peter Parker broken and fainting, he is between cycles, mutating and entering into the next cycle. We then see a room where, character is revealed to be restrained to a chair with a costume that looks an awful lot like Jean Grey from the comic books. This could very well be Sadie Sink playing Jean Grey with the theories that have been circulating. Jean’s primary ability is mind control, and we see glimpses of mind control in the scene where the old lady in the tank looks confused as the mind control switches from here to a soldier, who then passes it on to a soldier on a floor above. 

We are then revealed Scorpion, the villain we last saw in prison during Homecoming. We see Peter having an interaction with MJ, which gives us hope of them maybe getting back together. And finally, we hear the narrator say that,

“For those spiders who make it through (the cycle), it amounts to a kind of rebirth.”

While the screen shows stills of spiderman fighting villains, perfectly recreating various comic book panels. And finally the money shot scene of Spider-Man with pitch black eyes indicating the mutation; fighting “The Hand” who were first revealed in Netflix’s Daredevil. 

We then get the final title revealed in the signature spider man color palette  followed by a short clip of an interaction between MJ Ned and Peter, which looks like a continuation from the earlier scene of Peter Parker entering MJ’s apartment. This scene follows MJ saying that the flowers Peter has bought are nice, to which Peter replies by saying they are a house warming gift. MJ then introduces herself to Peter; indeed not knowing who he is, to which Peter says he is just a neighbour from across the hall and in reply with perfect word play MJ says…

“Friendly neighbour”

which is a direct reference to spiderman’s tagline 

“friendly neighborhood spider man”

which induces a cough from Peter.

Writers thoughts

I feel like Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going to be the movie we have all been waiting for. The attention to detail throughout the trailer, the story line with the possibility of Jean Grey feels very exciting. This movie would really be worth the wait, setting the perfect stage for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
