Episode 2 Recap
Our Blues episode 2 begins with Dong-Seok and Sun-a having fun on a beach 7 years ago. The two appear to be overjoyed as they play on the beach all night and enjoy a run along the sea as the morning rises. As the fun comes to an end, he kisses her, and she is caught away by the unexpected gesture of love… She is not amused and promptly takes a cab. He stops her and promises to take her in his car, but she expresses her dislike for him.

He questions her reasoning for thinking they were at the beach at night in the first place and informs her that a man and a woman cannot be friends. Then it progresses to the iconic “I know you have affections for me.” Despite his efforts to persuade her, she makes it apparent that this is not the case. Finally, he asks her why she doesn’t have feelings for him, and whether he isn’t worth her sentiments.
Dong-seok is currently selling practically anything imaginable. However, when he learns about another vehicle that has been making rounds in this specific location, he completely loses his mind. He starts yelling at the customers, throws his belongings on the street, and promises never to return. Meanwhile, Eun-hui is looking forward to the reunion, but his rascal brother’s habit of swindling money from her irritates her. Han-su, on the other hand, abandons all self-preservation and texts his sister to borrow 20 million won.
He immediately rushes to the reunion as Eun-hui and her companions argue in the restroom. When Han-su finally shows, he and his “first love” go down on the karaoke floor and jam together. With Dong-Seok on board, it’s a huge affair that appears to be a lot of fun. However, when In-gwon uses Han-su’s card to pay for the entire reunion, Eun-hui becomes irritated and goes in search of the card’s true owner. She learns that he was forced to pay 1.8 million won, and you can imagine how that would play out once Han-su stops vomiting and awakens from his booze-induced coma.

Sitting outside his house he decides to accompany Eun- Hui to her destination, despite the fact that he has nowhere to go and nothing to do. They go to the beach after finishing their morning duties and reminisce about their school days and how they used to come to the beach in their school uniforms. She says they were all so full of vitality and life, and Han-su says he hated being poor, but his buddies helped him forget about his problems.
Han-su appears to be tired with his circumstances, and he expresses this as well. Eun-hui disagrees, but it’s easy to see why given the path his life has followed. He recalls his prior self and jumps into the water, floating as Eun-hui shouts at him to return – he’s going to catch a cold! While floating, he strangely requests Eun-hui to lend him some money, which she is unable to hear. He then offers that they travel to Mokpo; she accepts but states that she would only go if the two of them go.

The next morning, while the market is bustling with merchants selling their fares, Eun-hui can’t help but remember what Han-su had told her. After considerable thought, she agrees to accompany him to Mokpo, but just as friends. Meanwhile, Han-su learns at work that Eun-hui transferred her funds from another bank to SS Bank and requested him to take the credit. Unfortunately, knowledge of his and his wife’s borrowing habits is getting around.
They soon go for Mokpo, and on the road, they reminisce about old times and listen to music together.
Author’s Thought
The second episode has got me all confused. With how many secrets Han-su is holding from Eun-hui, it nearly feels as if he’ll murder her for her money, which sounds ridiculous, but that’s the sense the program is generating at this point. Or is he going to woo her in order to get money from her?
Also, we see Dong-seok and Sun-a once and that is never again visited in the 72-minute runtime. Who is this girl? Why did we see her? Does she come back sometime later? Why does Dong-seok think that the world owes him something? The series leaves such with such questions and more, and I guess we’ll have to wait a bit to find the answers. Either way, Our Blues episode 2 feels a bit unnecessary and dragged since it literally doesn’t add anything worthwhile and just repeats what we have already seen.
That being said, I love the breezy background score and the scenes of the busy markets. They really are wonderful!
